He was popular and some thought his firing wasn't justified. There seems to be a need with this management to kick people on the way out (Nomar's failings became evident after he left, Manny the same.) If some flunky has access to Francona's medical records then they've got serious problems. And the fact they did nothing to find said flunky suggests they weren't at all bothered by how it went down.
