Well, I disagree with the idea that the Sox are like the Yankees of old. They
tended to give those big contracts to
over-the-hill players (or, approaching-the-top-of-the-hill) that didn't
necessarily fill a need for them. The Sox needed
a left-fielder when they signed Crawford, and he certainly wasn't OTH. The long
coveted Adrian Gonzalez, and he
fit their needs at the time. Lackey, well he certainly was a top pitcher when
they signed him. And look at the home-grown
good players on the team - Pedroia, Ellsbury, Lester, Youkilis, Buchholtz,
Doubrant, Bard - they all have made significant

contributions, or seem like they will....

I think they have gotten themselves in a bind where they don't want to spend
any additional money to cover for guys on the

DL (which I don't necessarily disagree with) and have some aging stars that are
inconsistent right now, who can't cover
for the number of role players they have starting.* 2 things will fix this -
the established players playing to their career
averages and getting guys healthy.

*And the brutal schedule to date hasn't helped.

Maybe I am being 'chicken little' here, but I don't think drastic remedies are
called for, mid-season. At least not yet.

Subject: Fire Sale

Tom made an interesting point earlier in the thread when he said, essentially,
"Doing the Yankee thing is not as easy as it looks."

I remember when the Yankees were not good at the "Yankee thing."  Bill James
wrote that the Yankees problem was that they constantly thought that they were
in contention and would trade away their youth for that "final piece" to put
them over the top.

The Red Sox are now there.  What this team desperately needs is a fire sale.  I
predict that we'll be nowhere interesting by the end of June and that it will
be time to start dumping veterans for prospects.  Who should go?

Beckett--obviously
Lackey--probably bundled with someone else and we still pay for him
Dice-K--Perhaps we could get a backup bag of balls.

Papi--Sorry, but yes. The guy is 36 years old with a one year contract.  It's
time to trade Papi for a raft of youth.

It's time for the Sox to recognize that they've run the barge up a creek.  Time
to turn it around and get back to open water.
