Oh come on. Jon Lester -- last September aside -- has been an ace-level pitcher for four years. Beckett has mixed in some crappy years, but as recently as last year, he had a 2.89 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 147 ERA+ (5th in the AL, even with September). Buchholz was 17-7, 2.33 in 2010, 6-3, 3.48 before getting hurt in 2011.
The Sox and their fans are not idiots for mistaking them for legit starters. They do appear -- by every definition of the word -- to suck right now, but they were practically the definition of 1-2-3 starters.
