It's a monster of their own creation, called the "sell-out streak", in which
they do all sorts of machinations to continue the "streak",
not limited to crazy FA signings... I suspect they are working overtime to try
and maintain it these days, with a listless, mostly indifferent
team that seems to view success as getting over .500 - then allowing themselves
to slip right back again.

I'm actually thankful that they will be on the road during my annual August
vacation on The Cape, so I won't be tempted to waste my
money seeing them in Fenway.

Subject: Theo's theory

Speaking of anemic.  There was an article in the Herald in which Theo was
supposed to lay out where he thinks the Sox went wrong.  The article is 98%
fluff, but there was one nugget.

Theo suggests the the high profile signings of Lackey and Crawford were driven
by a need to win now.  He seems to suggest that these were overreaching moves.

I have trouble with that idea.  I think that we expect a team like the Sox to
make occasional big free agents moves.  It just so happens that they weren't
very good at that kind of maneuver.
