They are pretty easy to calculate in your head with some practice. I do it this way.
First a base score using the number of innings pitch. 4 = 62 5 = 67 6 = 72 7 = 77 8 = 82 9 = 87 The pattern is that even innings end in 2 and odd end in 7. Its easy to remember 7 = 77. Add one point for each out beyond the number of innings. So 7.2 = 77 + 2 79. Add one point per strikeout Subtract one per walk Subtract 2 * number of hits Add R and ER multiply by 2 and subtract the result. So Dempster yesterday: 7 = 77 8K = 8 + 77 = 85 1BB = 85 - 1 = 84 5H = 85 - 10 = 75 4R + 2ER = 6*2, so 75 - 12 = 62. This is a score that should have won the game. But Diamond was 7, 3, 0, 0, 0 2. Left as an exercise to the reader.
