There are a few kinds of fish that are called pilot
fish. They all are big fish that eat other fish, and
are not going to do a reef any good. Gnathanodon
speciosus, the Gold Trevally, which is about the only
pilotfish that I have seen in a LFS, can go over 40
inches. Unless you have a couple thousand gallons to
fill up, they probably are not going to work for you.

I have heard the Sergeant Major damsels (Abudefduf
Saxatilis and Abudefduf Vaigiensis...) called a pilot
fish before. It is a damsel, and all types get to be
around 8-10 inches long, can be territorial and
aggressive. IMO they can be kept in reef tanks, many
people have or do.

Were you refering to another fish than the above?

Have a good one.
