Sent this mail a couple of days ago, but I don't remember if I ever saw
it in the digest, sorry if it's a double post.

Many good suggestions as usual, first of all thanks for the definitions of
coral sand/aragonite/oolithic, this has been confusing me.

I'll stop using the Vital Gold and the Iodine. I guess I'll just have to
keep an
eye on my Xenia.

I've almost finished building a 30g refugia, just waiting for some pipes
that
the mail company seems to have lost... It has a "sandbed" of approx. 2 1/2
inches deep
with a grain size of 1,5 - 2,5 mm (~1/16 inch) 20 lbs of live rock and some
macros.
Lighting is 2 x 13 w daylight PC and one 11 w Actinic, all on a reverse
light cycle.
It has been set up for about two weeks now and everything looks ok, macros
are growing.
I'm a little worried that the grain size is to big, but this was the
smallest I could get, it's actually
Aqua Medic's calcium reactor media. As soon as I get the pipes I'll hook it
up to the tank.
If this substrate doesn't work out I can always use it in a calcium reactor
later (Not built yet).

I'd very much like to have a substrate in the tank, Peter Shaw told me that
I could get aragonite from the UK. I was told by the company that it's
Aragamax Sugar
size. This sounds good, I usually get things from Germany, shipping costs
are $10 for
22lbs. shipping from the UK should be about the same.
I recentely asked Marie-Depot about shipping from the US, $100 for 15lbs
*shiver*.

I can put between 1 and 2 inches of sand in the tank without covering too
much rock, any
recommendations on the depth?

I do want to get the cc out of there, is it wise to go slowly with this or
should I take all out
in one go?

How about having a bare bottom for some time, to get as much as possible of
the detritus out?

As for the cc soaking things up I did a little unscientific test, I took two
handfulls out, washed
it really well and left it in a bucket half full of RO-water. I thought that
if it had soaked anything
up the water would turn foul due to the osmotic pressure pushing the gunk
into the water.
After two days it smelled worse than a decaying snail does! I rinsed the cc
again and put
new RO-water in to see for how long this will go on. Luckily I have an
unused bathroom to
do this experiment in. My better half did have some comments on this test
;-)

Thanks everyone!

/Fredrik
