Good suggestion. Something else that I have found works really well for the
joints is a plastic spoon. Is what you do is take the silicone and spread it
along the joints, using a lot of it, I mean really spread it on their thick,
then you take the spoon and dip it in cold water then run it along the
joint. You will find that it makes a smooth consistent line of silicone
along the joints that looks like a pro did it....

This won't work for any odd places, like a potato could. It really only
works in for the joints of the tank....

With the discussion on resiliconing, thought I would just add this
tip.

When resiliconing, trying to make the join etc neat is a nightmare,
using
wet fingers, washing up liquid etc.

Instead (daft as it might sound), buy a few potatoes. Cut them up to
the
shape you want and use them. (The inside surface.....)

You will find that the silicone will not stick to the potatoe. Goes
on
really smoothly and somehow helps it to stick better. It even works
on oily
parts of cars which haven't been cleaned 100%.

        FWIW

        Peter
