Reefkeepers,

This Sunday 4/29 Steve Gotz will be speaking on "Maturing the Captive Reef Environment." In his own words: Here's a brief synopsis... Captive reefs go through natural cycles, just like their wild counterparts. Most of the time it's our own meddling that throws the system out of whack, which never allows the system to develop into a mature ecosystem. I'll be discussing some of my observations and difficulties I've encountered whileallowing my systems to develop.

BIO: From a young age I had an affinity for tropical fish. Through the years I progressed from guppies, angelfish, cichlids and marine fish. I started my first reef in 1997 when my wife gave me a 30g reef starter package. The kit consisted of 2 NO bulbs, an under gravel filter, crushed coral and a hang on back power filter. Needless to say I went out and bought a few books on reef keeping and started educating myself. Eventually I realized the inherent problems with the setup I was given and decided to start fresh with a larger tank. Six months after starting my 30g I purchased a 125g with the intent of doing things correctly with this tank. In the process I significantly expanded my reading collection to include most of the available books on captive reefkeeping. Unfortunately about the time when the 125g was really maturing (~2 years old) I was forced to tear it down and move across the country. I now have a 120g-corner pentagon tank, which primarily houses SPS. It's been setup going on 7 months now and the system is starting to settle down.
