Alkalinity can be very high compared to current recommendations. We used to
run dKH in the low 20's as a matter of routine some years ago. We discovered
that the extra expense of maintaining levels that 'artificial' is not
necessary. We find that dKH consistently over 12 will cause SPS growth tips
to be very soft and easily broken. We like our numbers at 9-12 dKH with
Calcium 450+ pH anywhere from 7.8-8.4 is just fine. HTH.
