can you plumb them together but put them in separate rooms????
I can't believe I'm going to say this but if they are both going into your
living room or the such she's probably right....sounds like the 170 has a
pretty good looking stand and the 70 isn't quite as nice...(I've never seen
a particle board stand before). That's probably why she's allowing you to
upgrade your tank.
