Instead of putting in freshwater as your top-off water you could drip in 
saltwater that you have mixed.  Depending on the size of your tank drip in 
appriate amounts so as not to cause a sudden change give it a bit to 
throughly mix and then test.   To lower you could simply take out some tank 
water,  then slowly drip in some freshwater, give it a bit to mix then test.  
Just do everything in small amounts so not to cause a sudden large 
change.
