Craig,

100% correct as far as the un-naturalness of silica is concerned. However, 
not everyone has access to good Ca-based fine substrate. Silica IS a viable 
alternative since I use it whenever I run out of aragonite or very fine 
marble chips. Yup, you can also use finely-crushed marble is which also 
CaCO3, but this would probably cost more than aragonite and silica.

Other substrate I've tried before are fine beach sand as well as lake sand 
which is really fine - almost like mud.
