Larry,
I dont know if a deep sand bed in a container that small would be effective
for a tank that big. Most of what I have read and heard is that you want at
least 2/3 the surface area of the tank as DSB. It does not HAVE to be in the
tank, but it is best served if it is. The thought is that for the wastes of
the tank to be processed quickly and properly, the DSB should be in the
display so that as detritus collects, it is processed. Only a small
percentage of the detritus will leave the display and actually make it to
the DSB if it is external from the tank.
If you do go with one external, make it as big as you can. If you can fit a
55 gallon under your stand and link it to your sump, do that. At that point,
you could put some caluerpa in the 55 and light it and you would be in
pretty good shape, plus that would add even more water volume to your
system.
I fear that if you set up a DSB in such a small area, it will be
overwhelemed by the system, and may not work well for you.
