In my experience it matters what kind of LR you buy. I recently purchased 30 pounds of LR from Tampa Bay Saltwater & added it directly to my main tank,(150 gal) sponges & all. Unlike Fiji rock that is shipped damp there is very little die off & as a result I Have live rock that is truly amazing. I have live sponges in red, pink, orange, yellow & other encrusting growth in blue & purple (looks like cotton candy). The rock also has live corals, brittle stars, crabs, snails, etc. Ammonia & nitrite have not moved a measurable amount in 2 1/2 weeks since then.

Ben,
You should be fine doing that. Just dont plop 50 pounds of rock in there. I
think if you put one or two pieces in your sump, your system should be able
to handle that easily, and should be able to help it cure quickly.
IMO,
Shane C.
