I think they eat microorganisms (bacteria?) out of the water column. If you examine one with a magnifier, you might notice little tentacles emerging from the "spikes" on the organism. These are used to collect food. They are a sign of fairly good conditions, and will do no harm to your tank whatsoever. Any live rock you find should have a few of these somewhere. In a normal aquarium they will spread.
