I don't think there's very much to worry about in this case. There're 
basically 2 types of cukes - the sand sifters and the filter feeders. Sand 
sifters are like what you bought, and many others (some pretty horrendous 
looking ones too :)), while filter feeders (like the sea-apple) usually have 
feeding appendages flared in the water column to cathch particulate matter. 
These latter ones are the ones to avoid like the plaque.

In fact I'm about to get hold of some Stichopus variegatus myself, for a 
customer who needs to set up a cuke tank.
