You have a lot of experience in the field of urban planning in Jakarta. Besides this, I read on internet (and your weblog) that you are interested in historic preservation. I am a Dutch architect and I do research on (1) new town developments in Southeast Asia, specifically Vietnam, and (2) the transformation of the Dutch canal house into the typical Southeast Asian shophouse. The main questions are: (1) “How public are public spaces in new towns?”; and (2) “How is the concept of the Dutch canal house adapted to Batavia and to the other Southeast Asian countries?” My project is funded by The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture. Unfortunately we could not meet in Jakarta during my stay, because you live in the US. Nevertheless, hopefully you could help me to get in contact with people or institutions which are interesting for me. For example: do you know someone who is specialized in new town developments in the Jakarta Metropolitan Region or do you know someone who is specialized in the history of Batavia city? Thank you for your help in advance. Best Regards, Joep Janssen www.mekongmetropolis.org
