Some people dont wish to use the java regexp package for numerous reasons. And people chose to scatch whichever itches they wish. Just because Sun decide to implement something doesnt mean it should become the standard.
If you bothered to read the archives you will see numerous discussions on the comparisons of the various regexp packages around. Their strengths and weaknesses.
