Description:
------------
We would like to migrate a project from SourceForge to GNA:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/once/
One of the reasons is that the current team developing it is not the same as
the founders, the old people left a Design Document with ideas about the
game, but very little valuable code. The current team emerged by the end of
2004 and took a project almost dead by that time, we made a few releases
where you could at least run around in the world and do some basic actions of
what a real game is supposed to give.
We had a bit of a crisis lately due to lack of time and so on, but in the
last month we came back to work very actively in the game, and decided to
change mostly everything but the project code and some artwork (which is
almost entirely "ours", of the new team). One of these things involves to
change the name of the project and the hosting, hence this petition.
Other Software Required:
------------------------
The list of dependencies might be huge if I include all the things that the
project depends on (the game engine depends on lot of libraries for image
formats, sound, etc), so I'll include the main dependencies:
- CrystalSpace and CEL [ http://www.crystalspace3d.org/ ], under LGPL; all
the dependencies are supposed to be free and LGPL compliant (at least
Debian-free, because CrystalSpace is included in Debian Main)
- CEGUI within CrystalSpace [ http://www.cegui.org.uk/ ], LGPL (same as
CrystalSpace with dependencies)
- cal3d for skeletal animation [ http://cal3d.sourceforge.net/ ], LGPL
- PostgreSQL client libraries for the server
Other Comments:
---------------
We'd like to know if there are restrictions on GNA about two things quite
specific of this project.
The first is that, after some shortcomings of our own design, we decided to
try use d20 ( http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/welcome , which is
basically a portion of Dungeon&Dragon rules), the license (in the form of
Open Game License, not claiming to be d20-System License compliant) is
supposed to be a kind of BSD-like, but we're still studying the consequences
of using it.
The second problem is with the artwork, we theoretically have GPL'd artwork
too, but we don't currently distribute the "source" of the models because of
lazyness of the artists to do so, and also because they used 3DMax (a
proprietary program). We were also considering to use some kind of
CreativeCommons option to distribute the content but without having the
"source" of the models, just so at least we wouldn't be using a fake GPL. I
don't know if there's some analogy here in projects such as GNOME with icons
and other artwork that would serve to guide us?
Note that in both cases we intend to have GPL-like licenses if possible or
not trying to fake GPL when they aren't, while still maintaining the more
freedom that it's possible for those two aspects as well. I think that it's
important for you to know about this in order to decide to host this project,
and we would be grateful if you would give us some advice on how to procceed
with this. We'll try to make the necessary arrangements in these aspects too
in order to be hosted here, if necessary.
