Sven Neumann upstream has added a patch that fixes this, I've patched the 2.6.10 package and tested it and it seems good.
(I've just pushed it to a ppa here https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu- treblig/+archive/gimpfixes ) I've also attached the patch below (Sven's patch from Gnome git 6be41a6675007a0c7328453c654bcda5a2b875b0 didn't want to directly apply; I think just because of a little too much fuzz?)
