These are then two separate issues: 1. Some applications, like evince, do not render the attached document fine, some character groups are replaced with strange characters. 2. xpdf lagging while trying to move around with the keys in the attached document zoomed to 300% or 400%.
If I understood everything ok, then please report the second one as a separate issue using the command 'ubuntu-bug xpdf'.
