Ok, it looks like this is coming down the pike. Kernel 2.6.37 has support for lazily zeroing the itable, so should already be in Natty. e2fsprogs 1.41.13 detects the kernel support and enables lazy_itable_init by default. So it looks like we need to get the new e2fsprogs packaged in debian and merged into ubuntu and we should be good to go.
