A few minutes ago I finished compiling a patched kernel (standard Ubuntu 10.10 2.6.35.8 kernel .conf plus just this patch here) and guess what: WORKS! Only needed to change the Driver section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf back from vesa to intel...
