ERS JOB VACANCY: Chief, Rural Economy Branch Senior economists or social scientists in related fields are sought for a position as Chief of the Rural Economy Branch, Economic Research Service, USDA. ERS serves as the economic research and policy analytical arm of the USDA. The mission of ERS is to provide economic and social science information and analysis for public and private decisions regarding agriculture, food, the environment, and rural America. Branch Chiefs are responsible for leading high quality, technically complex programs of research, analysis, and information dissemination for 15-20 economists and other social scientists. Primary responsibilities include creating the overall vision for a high-impact program of research and analysis; providing input as needed into the planning and implementation of research projects; allocating staff and other resources necessary to accomplish this vision, and managing and reviewing branch staff and their outputs to assure high technical quality and proficiency. Research is published as ERS reports and journal articles, and results are reported in briefings to stakeholders, including often the Undersecretary for Rural Development and/or the USDA Chief Economist. The Rural Economy Branch focuses on the health of rural economies and the well-being of their populations. The Branch develops and maintains foundational indicators of current rural conditions and trends. In addition, branch staff conduct policy-related research on the drivers of economic and population growth and decline in rural areas. The Rural Economy Branch also conducts research on how economic, demographic, and policy changes affect the well-being of the rural population overall. Main topic areas include: rural business and industry, including new energy-related industries; rural and farm labor, including characteristics, unemployment, and earnings; rural population, including settlement patterns, migration and age structure; and rural and farm household well-being, including family structure, income, poverty, and health. This branch is unique in ERS in that staff include regional scientists, sociologists, demographers, and geographers, as well as economists.
