Two awards will be presented at the 2016 SRSA Conference during the Awards Banquet: (1) The William H. Miernyk Research Excellence Medal (for scholars no more than 6 years post-PhD; and (2) The Moriarty Graduate Student Paper Award These two awards recognize original and outstanding research in Regional Science. The William H. Miernyk Research Excellence Medal [papers due by February 1st, 2016] Upon its 40th anniversary, the Regional Research Institute at West Virginia University initiated an award for scholarly excellence in honor of Dr. William H. Miernyk, founding Director of the Institute. The William H. Miernyk Research Excellence Medal (the Miernyk Medal) is awarded annually to an eligible author of the best paper presented at the annual meeting of the Southern Regional Science Association. Eligibility. To be eligible, a Miernyk Medal candidate must 1. Be the driving intellectual force behind the paper and its primary contributor, 2. Not be eligible for the Moriarty student paper competition, 3. Be no more than six years post-Ph.D., 4. Not hold a position at a rank higher than Assistant Professor or equivalent, and, 5. Be registered for the annual meeting and must be in attendance at the SRSA Awards Banquet. Submission. Submission letters must include documentation of meeting registration, and for papers with multiple authors, must identify the Miernyk Medal candidate. Papers should be submitted via email to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> by February 1 of the competition year. Decision. The winning paper will report diligent and systematic enquiry into and discovery of facts or principles relating to a regional science topic. The Miernyk Medal winner will not be announced prior to the Awards Banquet at the annual meeting. The winner will be determined by consensus of the review panel, which may elect not to make an award in the absence of a consensus. Moriarty Graduate Paper Competition [papers due by March 1st, 2016] The Southern Regional Science Association (SRSA) awards an annual cash prize to the graduate student submitting the best paper in Regional Science. In 2016, the prize is $1,000. Papers on any regional science topic may be entered into the competition. Papers should represent original research. Maps, illustrations and other audio-visual materials should be designed or constructed by the author. The following qualifications apply: - The student must be enrolled full-time at an accredited academic institution for some or all of the year following March 2016. The graduate student must still be enrolled at the time his or her paper is submitted; - The student must be the sole author and must be sponsored by a member of SRSA; and - The winning student must present the paper at a session of the 55th Annual Meeting of the SRSA, March 31- April 2, 2016, in Washington, DC, using the award to defray costs of attending. Papers should be double-spaced, no more than 25 pages in length, and written in the style of the SRSA's Review of Regional Studies. A cover page should include the paper's title and abstract and, for both the author and the sponsor, full names, addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses.
