Gary Oldman plays radically different characters.  He was completely over 
the top in "The Fifth Element", but he pretty much had to play that 
character that way.  And Mark Hamill, despite his acting talents (he was 
fantastic as the Trickster on The Flash), is always perceived as Luke 
Skywalker by the majority of people.

Most people are going to know an actor's style, or something of it, and 
look for it in every performance.  That's both good and bad.  Does Conan 
ever say, "I'll be back" in the first movie?  I don't think so.  But if 
Arnold were to make a Conan movie today, who would bet he wouldn't try to 
get that line into the script?
