On the contrary, the article by Darrell Schweitzer, in a sad effort to boost
letters to his and Scither's Weird Tales magazine, did not affect the
reputation of either Rusty or Howard. He only affected his own reputation.
In fact, Don Herron (The Dark Barbarian) and I and others on another list
have taken Darrell to task for it. However, you must realize that Darrell
undertook this somewhat tongue in cheek. He is a well know fantasy
generalist, and doesn't claim to be expert on either Howard of de Camp but
remains a defender of de Camp because he WAS a member of the de Camp's
circle of friends and acquaintances. He does have anecdotal knowledge of the
de Camp's. He is also responsible for the worst book on REH which he did
while in his youth, and readily admits it has no merit and is best forgotten
He also seems to have a habit of putting his foot in his mouth because
everytime he mounts a defence, he opens himself up to more criticism by
people like me who have studied de Camp in detail.
