Linda Greenhouse's initial review of Justice Blackmun's papers -- http://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/04/politics/04BLAC.html?hp -- reveals that Justice Kennedy was originally the author of a 5-4 decision upholding the school prayer in Lee, but after several months he conceded that his "draft looked quite wrong," and proceeded to switch his vote, and his opinion for the Court.
