Thank you all for your help, I got it working. Moving the function to a 
separate .rem-file and making sure this one is the first calendar in my 
directory of calendars did the trick. I'm still not sure where the illegal 
character came from, Jostein, I had no trailing blanks in that line. Now remind 
does something no other calendar of mine ever could. Love it!
