I forgot to mention that neither xr nor xralpha uses an alpha map for
the page: the page is completely opaque even when alpha-aliasing is
being done.

Following Keith's and Owen's explanations, I only include an alpha map
in the page if the server was kind enough to give me an eight-bit
alpha map in the default visual.

To my knowledge, there is exactly one PS document that makes use of
the page's alpha buffer, and that is a NeXT demo that is long obsolete.
If you need an alpha buffer in your pages, please do let me know why.
I'd definitely like to know why.
