I had an IFR1000 as my first service monitor. The power supply was
bad, and IFR quoted $1600 for replacement! That was more than the
monitor was worth. So, I did what any good ham would do, I built my
own! I used an AC supply to create 15 volts, then used DC-DC
converters to create the voltages needed. It worked fantastic, much
better than the OEM unit. I packaged it in the rear of the unit,
just like factory.

I did change the operation a little, the on board battery only ran
the oscillator. That way I could unplug the monitor and travel to
the mountain, and the oscillator is running all the time. I had AC
at the mountain, so I would plug in and be ready to go. The battery
would run the oscillator for 10 hours. It would be trickle charged
when plugged in.

I also changed the way the fan worked. I created a two step fan,
when the unit was turned on, the fan ran slowly. When needed by the
thermostat, the fan sped up. Much nicer.

Anyway, thats what I did. I turned out better than I could have
hoped, and I learned a lot about how that IFR switcher worked, which
was poor!
