Will the 900-MHz MSF-5000s work in the ham band? If so, do you have to use
some special "hacked" RSS software or cumbersome "hex editor" to move it to
the ham band? I see these often up for sale and/or auction and would like
to know before I consider getting one.

They make very good repeaters. If the one you have is close enough to the
HAM band then you can move it without very much of a problem.

If you don't want to tackle it, and you are close to Dallas, and you want to
sell the unit, let me know.
