You might want to try out Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 - with 2000/XP you can 
boot *any* OS and run the software you want - with need for drivers even. I 
can boot a FreeBSD, Win2K server, Win2003 Server, Linux, DOS 6.2, and 
anything else I can load on only one PC. A complete lab has been replaced by 
one machine with Virtual PC. Should save some hoisting for you. I know it 
did for me. I believe they still have a free download trial so you have 
nothing to lose. Mind you, it won't create a serial port for you but a real 
USB serial and Virtual PC should work fine.
