If I might make a suggestion, you may want to consider a Motorola Mitrek. A friend of mine built the NC7J DX Cluster Node several years ago. http://nc7j.qrq.com/site_description.htm When he did, he asked me what radio would be good for this job. I suggested a Mitrek. We originally looked for one that was the lower government split so it could be easily tuned for 421 MHz. Those proved hard to come by so I tried tuning a standard 450 - 470 MHz split radio. I was stunned by how well it worked, without any noticeable degradation in TX or RX. The conversion to 9600 baud packet was a snap too. This was around 7 years ago and the radio has performed flawlessly. Also, you can pick up a Mitrek for 10 or 20 bucks at a swap meet.
