Doug,
I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a
little DC coupling between the hardware.  I fixed my
problem with the installation of an isolation
transformer (RadioShack Part # 273-1374).  I put one
each on the audio IN and the audio OUT of the remote
base transceiver.  This will take care of any DC
coupling or ground loops that may be present in your
system.
