Try using 0W-30 fully synthetic oil in the crankcase. I find that that does not thicken nearly as much as regular 5W-30 oil in my generator. I can normally spin it easily even at -20.
0W-30 synthetic is not easy to find but I did find some at Wal-Mart in the past and Esso has some called ZERO oil that the farmers around here use on their tractors in the winter.
