The first thing that comes to mind is receiver drifting off frequency. Try having someone come in at +1 or -1 kHz, and see if they sound better.
If the TX was off, I'd expect your receiver AFC to follow it up to a point. But that would be worth checking too. COULD be an electrolytic in the audio path that isn't much of a cap when it gets cold.
