LOL is definitely not that... it's "Laugh out Loud" used to indicate the discussion is making you laugh. (Yahoo Instant Messenger even laughs in a little kid's voice if you type it...) Many of these came about from the old BBS days when a 1200 baud modem was screaming fast... and typing shortcuts saved on sending stuff over the modem... The "laughing" ones were generally around first... including: LOL - Laugh out loud ROFL - Rolling on the Floor Laughing ROFLMAO - Rolling on the Floor Laughing my *** Off Etc... And then "emoticons" came along, as a way to try to give people a good hint when you're joking, etc... :-) ;-) 8^] Etc etc etc... various instant messenger and mail clients now convert these from the three text characters to a graphic. And AFAIK and IANAL have always been popular in online discussions... AFAIK - As far as I know IANAL - I am not a lawyer... but... Nate WY0X
