Skipp, I have had one of the original PSE-508
controllers in service for over a year now, and am
completely satisfied with it. I had a 440 repeater on
the air using the stock GE repeater controller cards
installed and was using EchoLink to ID it, and by
simply removing the two stock cards and plugging in
the PSE card I was in business with DTMF control and
voice and CW ID. In addition, I was able to remove
the stock GE CTCSS decoder card. My repeater is
installed on the side of the antenna support tower out
in the middle of a pasture with no environmental
control.
My PSE card does not have the CTCSS encoder built in,
but the later versions do have this capability. They
even have a mode that encodes the CTCSS only while a
user is present on the input so that in-band linking
is very simple.
Al published my EchoLink interface on his web site
(the PSE508 web site) that used the PSE-508. I had a
500 ft cable between the computer and the repeater
using this interface which worked OK until a
high-power AM broadcast station came on line about 5
miles from my location. I had audio from the BC
station on the input of my repeater and also on the
EchoLink audio to the internet. I will have to go to
an RF in-band link to eliminate the problem as I was
not able to get rid of it on the long cable.
