The analog bag phones were used for broadcast remotes all the time.

Listen to the horrible audio on call-in shows. A number of them won't accept 
cell calls because of it.

PS: Phoenix [AZ] Fire did extensive testing of the 800 MHz P25 trunked 
simulcast system vs. the VHF HiBand analog FM.
Guess what they're still using 5 years later.
