In order to not get too rough on the charging cycle, how about putting an inexpensive AC timer on the float charger and set it to be off part of the time. I would agree about the proper float charge voltage being the "key" to not boiling the batteries dry. We float the bank in our substations all the time and are careful not to set the voltage so high as to gas the batteries and they stay in standby for years on end.
