/usr/bin/printf is currently closed-source, however we're working on a replacement codebase which will be completely opensource and will cover this CR# (and most of the other RFEs for /usr/bin/printf), too - see http://mail.opensolaris.org/pipermail/ksh93-integration-discuss/2007-December/005831.html for the matching ARC case draft.
