Looks like I've shot myself in the foot...

During backup of a Powerbook FireWire in disk mode, the battery went empty 
and the coresponding backup set was not finalized properly. At hat time, 
about 95% of the volume was backed up. When I try to access the backup set 
or any files/folders within, I get a

"Bad backup set header found: 0xb47d25eb at 2.622.223", and/or
"Backup set format inconsistency (10 at 2810064)",

and that's it. Does Retrospect depend on a correctly written trailer, or is 
there any way of forcing a restore? After all, the data is there...
