 ## Upgrading from Spark SQL 4.3 to 4.4

+- Since Spark 4.4, recognized escape sequences in quoted Variant path keys are
decoded. In Spark 4.3 and earlier, backslashes were treated literally. Existing
paths may therefore match different keys or become invalid. For example,
`$['a\']` now raises an invalid-path error; use `$['a\\']` instead.
Unrecognized escapes remain literal, and dot-notation keys are unchanged. To
restore the previous behavior, set
`spark.sql.legacy.variantPathBackslashAsLiteral` to `true` before creating the
query.
