Github user holdenk commented on the issue: https://github.com/apache/spark/pull/15659 @nchammas that method of installing does not appear to work and I don't think we can reasonably expect it to (notable it doesn't install the source dist file instead it creates a virtual link to the python directory). If you install the source dist as described above (e.g. `./build/sbt package;cd python; python setup.py sdist; cd dist; pip install *.tar.gz`) or if you want to test with make-distirbution go to the distiribution directory and install the python pip artifacts from there?
