Thanks for the pointer. I've created a Jira ticket and renamed this issue
to reflect it.
The individual commits in this PR are written to be self-contained and
clear enough to follow linearly, like sub-PRs that build upon each other. That
said, I'm happy to break them into separate PRs if that makes reviewing easier
(though each PR will look more or less like an individual commit). I'm curious
what others think is the best way forward.
