so yeah... some of these PRs created during the "troubles" we had over the
past couple of weeks aren't responding well to the PRB trigger. we have a
couple of options here:
1) close this PR and open a new one (on a new branch), and things will just
'work'.
2) i can babysit this PR if (1) turns out to be too onerous.
