    Haven't worked with this in a while and different versions of boto may 
alter things, but
    1. You might not need to specify a subnet if you have a default VPC 
configured. In general I think if you don't specify a subnet boto ignores the 
vpc argument. Since VPC/subnet can be tied to different regions it's a good 
practice to specify everything as a sanity check.
    2.  Should be able to to run ./spark-ec2 from any box connected to the 
internet - doesn't need to be run within ec2 or within a vpc/subnet.
