Hi everyone,
OpenOffice & other apps using the newer style of GTK printing will not
recognize raw print queues by default. The print button will be grayed out.
The fix is to create an empty printername.ppd file in /etc/cups/ppd.
After that, printing works fine.
All cups printers must have a a /etc/cups/ppd/printername.ppd file in
order to be used in openoffice. The ppd file can be empty, it just has
to be present.

Sincerely,
Jason
